Wandering in the Wilderness
After crossing the Red Sea and escaping from the Egyptians, Moses led the Israelites into the wilderness. God took care of them, sending them manna and quail to eat. But many of the Israelites grumbled and wished they were back in Egypt. Moses went up on Mount Sinai, where God gave him the Ten Commandments on two tablets of stone. When Moses came down from the mountain, he found out the Israelites had made a golden calf idol and were worshipping it. He broke the stone tablets God had given him and the people were punished. God made another set of tablets for Moses. God also gave them instructions on how to worship him. They built a special tent called the tabernacle that they used to worship God. They took it with them wherever they went.
When they got close to the land God had promised them, they sent in 12 spies to check out the land. When the spies came back, ten of them said the land was good, flowing with milk and honey, but that the people in the land were too big for them to conquer. They did not have faith that God would help them. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, said that with God's help they could conquer the land. The people chose to believe the ten spies, and did not think that they should try to conquer the promised land. God punished them for their lack of faith and made them wander for 40 years in the wilderness until all those over 20 died, except for Joshua and Caleb.
