CAIN AND ABEL
Adam and Eve's first child was a son named Cain.
Their second child's name was Abel. Cain was a farmer
and Abel was a shepherd. Both of them brought an
offering to the Lord. Cain brought some of the
things he had grown, and Abel brought the first and best of his
flock.
God liked Abel's offering, but did not like Cain's offering. The
Bible does not say for sure why this was so, but it was probably
because Cain did not give the best of his crops, but kept the
best for himself.
Because God liked Abel's offering better, Cain got angry
at Abel and killed him. When God asked Cain
where his brother was, Cain said, "I don't know. Am I my
brother's keeper?"
But God knew what had happened. God cursed Cain
and told him that the ground would not grow good crops for him,
and that he would be a wanderer for the rest of his life. God put
a special mark upon Cain, so that others would
know not to kill him.
Cain couldn't fool God; neither can we. God knows all that we do
and think. Remembering this helps us to be good.
